Meet Our 2025 IGAD Media Awards Winners
The IGAD Media Awards 2025 proudly celebrates twenty outstanding journalists, storytellers, photographers, filmmakers, and media innovators whose work has shaped the climate action narrative across the IGAD region. This year’s edition, held under the theme “Storytelling for Climate Action: For a Secure, Resilient, and Stable Region,” recognises exceptional contributions that illuminate the lived realities, challenges, and solutions emerging from communities at the front lines of climate change.
Hailing from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda, the 2025 winners were selected from hundreds of submissions across all award categories, including print, radio, television, digital, photography, gender-responsive media, indigenous language reporting, and upcoming media personality.
Their stories reflect courage, innovation, and a deep commitment to public-interest journalism. Together, they embody a new generation of media professionals using their craft to drive awareness, inspire action, and strengthen resilience across the Horn of Africa.

Ledama Masidza is a marine conservationist, impact storyteller, and Indigenous food systems advocate whose work centres on elevating community voices in climate action across the IGAD region.
He uses storytelling to bridge scientific knowledge with lived experience, highlighting how local leadership drives resilience. His contributions include supporting the restoration of community-managed marine areas in Kenya and representing grassroots perspectives at global platforms such as COP and the World Conservation Congress. Through films, campaigns, and community partnerships, he promotes climate solutions rooted in traditional wisdom, collective responsibility, and sustainable development.

A dedicated journalist and media professional, he has reported extensively across the Horn of Africa, covering political developments, peacebuilding efforts, and human-interest stories that reflect the realities of communities within the IGAD region. His work has contributed to strengthening regional understanding through fact-based and people-centered storytelling.
He previously served with Arlaadi Media, progressing from Reporter to Head of News, Director of Programs, and later Kenya Representative in 2024. His leadership roles enabled him to guide editorial teams and shape impactful programming.
Now serving in the media and communication portfolio at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia in Dar es Salaam, he brings valuable experience in regional journalism, institutional communication, and public diplomacy.

Steve Mokaya Ondieki is a Kenyan journalist currently pursuing a Master’s degree in International Media Studies in Bonn, Germany, supported by Deutsche Welle. His work highlights the links between climate change, biodiversity, and human stories across Africa through reporting that connects science with lived experience.
Founder and host of The Nature Trail Podcast, he has earned multiple national AJEA Awards and the international IFAJ Star Prize. He also edits The Africana Voice, a USA-based diaspora publication. A 2025 IJP Fellow, he uses journalism to advance impactful storytelling that drives awareness, conservation, and meaningful climate action.

A Ugandan journalist with extensive experience in development and environmental reporting, he currently works with Uganda Radio Network, where he covers climate change, water diplomacy, extractives, and natural resource governance. His career spans roles with Vision Group’s features desk, Inter Press Service (IPS), and Deutsche Welle’s AfricaLink, with his stories published in regional and global outlets.
Recognized for excellence in climate and conservation journalism, he has received multiple awards, including the UNFCCC Clean Development Award, Nile Media Award, Uganda Conservation Awards, and honors for oil and gas reporting. He continues to advance impactful, solutions-driven environmental storytelling.

Maryann Muganda is a Health and Science Journalist with The Standard newspaper under the Standard Group PLC in Nairobi, Kenya. She reports widely on maternal health, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), animal health, and environmental issues, using storytelling to highlight inequalities in healthcare access and amplify the voices of women and girls.
She has participated in several notable fellowships, including the Dignified Menstruation Media Fellowship and the Africa Health Communications Fellowship, strengthening her ability to communicate complex public health issues. Passionate about solutions-driven reporting, Maryann continues to champion dignity, equity, and informed dialogue on health and science across Kenya and the wider IGAD region.

A Ugandan journalist with a strong focus on climate and environmental reporting, he works with Radio Unity FM 97.7 in Lira, where he has been practicing journalism since 2019. He covers community-centered stories that highlight the relationship between people, ecosystems, and sustainable development in Northern Uganda.
Passionate about creating awareness, he reports on the impacts of climate change, environmental degradation, and local adaptation efforts. Alongside his newsroom work, he engages communities to spotlight underrepresented voices and promote informed dialogue on environmental challenges. He brings expertise in climate communication, public-interest storytelling, and community-focused reporting.

Getnet Shenkute is an Ethiopian journalist and media professional with extensive experience in communication and storytelling. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Foreign Language and Literature and a Master’s in Journalism and Communication, combining language skills with solid editorial expertise.
He serves as Team Leader and Deputy Editor-in-Chief at the Ethiopian News Agency, where he also oversees social media platforms and digital engagement. He further contributes to Pulse of Africa, a newly launched Pan-African media platform. His work consistently reflects a firm commitment to credible journalism, media innovation, and strengthening Africa’s collective voice in regional and global conversations.

Gabriel Gatluak Wal, known professionally as Gabuu Myles, is a South Sudanese filmmaker, producer, and visual storyteller who specialises in documentary production, film direction, and photography. He currently works as a Producer at King Media, developing documentary films and multimedia projects that elevate real human stories and social issues.
He also serves as Communication Officer for the Kulang Foundation, overseeing media communication and community-focused storytelling. Gabuu has collaborated with UNDP, UNHCR, and the International Trade Centre on projects documenting displacement, resilience, and women’s empowerment. Passionate about impactful storytelling, he continues to shape South Sudan’s growing creative and media landscape.

Abdirahman Salad Abdulle is a Somali photojournalist from Mogadishu with five years of experience documenting environmental resilience and the human impacts of climate change. He works as a photographer for the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), capturing frontline humanitarian and environmental challenges.
He has also contributed to the Wadajir Party and previously worked with Mustaqbal Media. His compelling visual storytelling has earned recognition, including winning the 2023 USAID Photo Contest and being shortlisted for the 2024 UNDRR Art Competition. He also documents Somalia’s annual cultural festival, reflecting his commitment to portraying both vulnerability and the vibrancy of Somali life.

Andrew Kasuku is a Kenyan freelance photojournalist with eight years of experience documenting news, climate impacts, and social issues across the country. Based in Nairobi and contributing to the Associated Press, he has covered political protests, human rights unrest, extreme weather events, cultural moments, and breaking news with a strong visual storytelling approach.
He has completed assignments for AFP, Anadolu Agency, and AP, with his work published widely. Driven by passion, he travels to remote regions to highlight communities often overlooked by mainstream media. A 2022 AJEA Photojournalist of the Year runner-up, he is also an Earth Journalism Network Fellow.

Amina Idan Paul is a Djiboutian energy and sustainable development engineer whose work focuses on climate education, youth engagement, and environmental justice. She serves at the Ministry of Energy and founded Écolo à Djibouti, an initiative promoting environmental awareness through community projects and youth-centered programmes.
Amina is also a climate writer dedicated to simplifying complex scientific topics for broader audiences. Her leadership has earned her recognition as an IGAD Earth Champion, One Young World Ambassador, and member of the Possibilists Council. She represented youth and women at COP29, advocating for climate resilience, gender equality, and inclusive environmental action across Africa.

Ahmed Absie is a Somali journalist, media trainer, and environmental advocate, serving as Founder and Director of the Green Media Initiative (GMI), a platform established in 2024 to strengthen Somalia’s climate and environmental storytelling. With a background in Agricultural Science and a Master’s in Media and Communication, he bridges scientific knowledge with impactful public-interest reporting.
Under his leadership, GMI has reached millions through awareness campaigns, media reports, and community programmes. He has trained more than 250 journalists and youth, positioning himself as one of Somalia’s leading voices in climate education, accountability, and sustainable development.

Jamila Mohamed Abdullahi is a Kenyan award-winning journalist and media executive with more than 24 years of experience in broadcast journalism and newsroom leadership. She serves as Managing Editor at Citizen Television, where she leads teams producing high-impact news coverage watched across the country. Her reporting has spanned elections, humanitarian crises, and national reforms, earning recognition including the Head of State Commendation and multiple AJEA investigative journalism awards.
A respected mentor and advocate for ethical reporting and inclusive storytelling, she continues to shape Kenya’s media landscape while championing the visibility of women and marginalized voices.

Ayebare Cinderella is a Ugandan youth multimedia reporter and storyteller working with the Peace Journalism Foundation Uganda. Based in Kampala, she produces solutions-focused narratives that highlight children’s experiences, refugee realities, peacebuilding efforts, gender-based violence, and environmental issues across the country.
With a BA in Tourism, she also promotes Uganda’s cultural and natural heritage through positive storytelling. Her innovative reporting earned her recognition as a Top Six finalist in the 2024 Isu Elihle Awards by Media Monitoring Africa. She remains committed to uplifting vulnerable communities and inspiring hope through impactful public-interest journalism.

Annastacia Kiragu is a multilingual Kenyan broadcast journalist recognised for her data-driven and innovative storytelling. Based in Nairobi, she is completing her Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Production at the University of Nairobi, where she also worked as a multimedia journalist and filmmaker with UNC TV and UNC Radio.
She created and produced Journey Uncharted and Education Spur, projects that earned her the Best Documentary Film award at Filamu Festival 2025 and a nomination for Best Emerging Female Media Personality. A 2025 CNN Academy Fellow, she is dedicated to telling impactful stories on political, economic, and social issues across Africa.

Bonface Barasa is a Kenyan multimedia journalist with nine years of experience and currently reports for Citizen TV and Radio at Royal Media Services. He focuses on communities in Samburu, Isiolo, and Marsabit, regions affected by banditry, cattle rustling, gender-based violence, female genital mutilation, and climate-related hardships.
Through his reporting, he has highlighted injustices and secured real change, including scholarships for minors who escaped early marriage. Before joining Royal Media Services, he worked with TV47 in Trans Nzoia County, where his storytelling helped mobilise support for a boy seeking to fund his education. His work continues to spotlight overlooked communities and the human face of climate and development in Northern Kenya.

Hipa Abdalazeem Muhammad Salih is a Sudanese investigative journalist specialising in environmental reporting, corruption tracking, and climate-related investigations. A graduate of the Faculty of Media at Omdurman Islamic University, she has been trained by the Thomson Reuters Foundation and the Taz Panter Foundation on illicit finance, climate reporting, and gendered climate impacts.
Currently based in Uganda due to the conflict in Khartoum, she works as a freelance journalist for international outlets, including Al Jazeera, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, The New Humanitarian, El País, and The Christian Science Monitor, producing impactful investigations on pollution, resource exploitation, and environmental injustice.

Shimekit Legese Wolde is a senior reporter at Oromia Broadcasting Network (OBN), where he specializes in business reporting and analysis on national and international issues.
He also hosts Caayaa, an investigative journalism programme on OBN. His work includes impactful storytelling initiatives that raise awareness on reforestation, the Green Legacy, and broader climate change agendas, reflecting his strong commitment to environmental issues and public-interest journalism.

Faisal Mohamed Salih is a distinguished Sudanese journalist, editor, and media rights advocate with decades of experience in independent reporting, press freedom, and public communication. A graduate of Al-Azhar University with a Master’s degree from the University of Wales, he has led major national media institutions and currently heads Teeba Press, a prominent organisation dedicated to strengthening professional journalism in Sudan.
Throughout his career, he has faced detention, censorship, and criminal charges for his unwavering commitment to truth and accountability, earning global recognition—including the prestigious 2013 Peter Mackler Award for Courageous and Ethical Journalism. A former Minister of Culture and Information during Sudan’s democratic transition, Saleh remains a leading voice for media reform, responsible governance, and the protection of fundamental freedoms.

Meaza Birru Gebrewold is a pioneering Ethiopian radio journalist and majority owner of Sheger Radio 102.1 FM, the country’s first private radio station. With a career in broadcasting that spans more than 40 years, she launched Sheger as a passion project 18 years ago and has since turned it into one of Ethiopia’s leading information and entertainment stations.
Through flagship programmes such as Manin Min-enteyikilewo? (Who Can We Ask for You?) and Sheger Café, she connects citizens with government services and creates space for thoughtful discussion on social, legal, and political issues. Guided by the station’s motto Yenantew Radio (“Your Radio”), Meaza remains committed to public service journalism and amplifying the voices of ordinary Ethiopians.
